Mike McQueary has been chastised for a week now about his role in the infamous Penn State child sex scandal that has rocked America. It was McQueary, allegedly, who walked in on former school defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky molesting a young boy in the showers back in 2002 and eventually turned him in.
Unfortunately, while McQueary did turn Sandusky in the day after he allegedly witnessed his despicable acts, he’s still being viewed as a coward for not doing anything in that specific shower on that specific night.
The story going around is that McQueary, when confronted with the image of Sandusky allegedly raping a young boy, turned around and ran away from the scene. From there, he called his father and sought out his advice. On his father’s urging, he reported the incident to then Penn State head coach Joe Paterno.
In recent days, many wondered how it was possible that McQueary could walk in on an adult allegedly molesting a young boy, and not stop it in some way. Shock and everything aside – how he could stand by and just let it happen is mind-boggling in every way.
Well, according to the Morning Call -- as per e-mails they have obtained -- McQueary says he did stop the alleged rape that was occurring.
In the email obtained by The Morning Call, dated Nov. 8, McQueary said "I did stop it, not physically, but made sure it was stopped when I left that locker room."
"No one can imagine my thoughts or wants to be in my shoes for those 30-45 seconds," McQueary wrote. "Trust me."
Fair enough. Let’s assume that McQueary did stop the alleged rape from taking place, albeit not physically. And let’s assume from there, he ran and called his father and sought out his advice. Following that, let’s say he went directly to Paterno and confessed what he saw.
How does that explain the fact that McQueary continued to work in varying capacities for the university’s football program knowing full well nothing ever happened to Sandusky? Don’t forget, Sandusky had been spotted continuing to work out on campus for years after the fact. He even held office at the university on numerous occasions.
McQueary, based on various reports, at the very least saw Sandusky hanging out around campus and at the most attended future joint functions with the man. Knowing what he said he saw with his own eyes, how could he stand to be a part of an institution that harbors an alleged rapist?
So, yes – McQueary may have stopped the rape in that one particular shower on that one fateful night. But by not bringing more attention to the matter when he realized the university would turn a blind eye, he enabled this alleged pedophile to continue to commit the despicable actions he’s accused of committing.
