Should Iran Be Allowed Nuclear Power?

"Today, we are a nuclear country and we are talking to others from that position." Those were the words of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, explaining his refusal to suspend his country's uranium enrichment program. While many believe that Iran has a right to develop nuclear power, others, including the Bush administration, fear a parallel nuclear weapons program. How should the international community react to Iran’s burgeoning atomic ambitions?

Are you kidding me that whole reagion is to hostel for anything like this kind of weapon and they are never in control of there own little world chaos is all the know....I say hell no!!!

You do realize that there is a big difference between reactors that produce fuel for nuclear weapons and reactors that produce electrical energy ?

I know more than you think I am a former Marine, but I do know that when used the wrong way it is deadly TO MILLIONS of people and by god if they are using it for electrical energy they should no problems letting U.N. look in on them but I bet they will. That kind of "energy" needs to be watched after close cause once they have the know how it is nothing to make one of these weapons and do you really want a reagion that has not known peace for hundreds of years to have one cause take a guess who the target is..

No one should be allowed to have nuclear weapons. Just the USA has enough to blow up the world five times! That's scary. Do we really want anyone to have that power?

Since I am against all nations having nuclear bombs I can find no justification for any to have them. On the other hand, since some already have them then everyone should have the right to them. The US and other countries who have nuclear weapons stand on no moral high ground to be telling others if they should or shouldn't have them.
This is a pointless debate. The real debate should be about everybody, including the US, dismantling and outlawing all nations from having such destructive potential.

Too bad it was a free society - i.e. America and others, that help bring Iran and other middle east countries outta their sand huts and caves. Too bad they didn't look to free society as a way of providing citizen with individual rights. Too bad Islamic Totalitarianism is the EVIL of this world and should immediately be eradicated. Too bad Israel doesn't act on the threats from Iran. Its not a matter of 'should' Iran be allowed - Iran really isn't much of country when it disregards basic individual rights of its citizens - so really - I say Israel go in there and take that Totalitarian government out and rebuild individual rights and make Iran an real country. Then yes, they can have Nuclear Power.

The question of "allowing" somehow inappropriately suggests ownership of Iran by those other than the Iranian people - appropriately represented by their government or not. All that can come of a conflict between those feeling threatened and a nation believing in its own sovereignty is violence. The question of Iran's possession of nuclear technology ought not be framed in this way. It is divisive and confrontational - precisely what will lead to the events one fears.

The position of wisdom and strength, the best use of knowledge, time and resources is to encourage responsible uses of nuclear technology as preferable to less responsible uses. Naturally, one does little to teach such responsible uses by others if one's own behavior in that regard is intellectually dubious. If one wishes other nations to behave responsibly, one can do no better than to teach by example. It is immature to possess a big stick and then threaten others with censure or even violence if they do the same. This is not a position of wisdom and peace - it is a position borne of ignorance and fear and a threat to the wise, peaceful and physically less powerful caught in the middle.

There is good reason to believe the government of Iran capable of offensive uses of nuclear technology, but then the U.S. is just as capable of such offense and has a unique history of doing so. That the U.S. government is capable of irresponsibility is on record. That the government of Iran is capable of irresponsibility is also on record. Regardless, we ought not punish what remains only the potential of offense. Only real offense must face consequence. If Iran has peaceful intent in its uses of nuclear technology, we do well to encourage them along that path. We do well also to convince the Iranian government there is no defensive need of such weapons if threats to its sovereignty can be remedied in more peaceful ways.

As human beings, we all possess the potential for irresponsibility and savagery. Let us not punish what one might do. Let us only consequence true offense. Of course, let us be wise in face of such potential.

That is wisdom. That is peaceful. That is our best future.

Mr. "Speak as Western Powers" apparently hails from Los Angeles, CA. All the while, if I read his comment correctly, he calls Americans savages, and says that the Persians should pull out of all treaties with the West and declare war. How else are we to interpret "call them for a real fight"?

It is difficult to take his comment seriously. But if we take him at his word (with liberal interpretations for grammar and meaning) -- namely that he is an Iranian-sympathizer living in and benefiting from the nation of The Great Satan -- he is essentially stating that he loves being a cardiologist in our country, free to pursue his own happiness, but at the same time wants us all to die at the hands of a dirty bomb delivered on the back of a donkey led by a fanatical Islamist.

When I put it that way, it sounds fantastical, crazy. I must be overstating it, putting words in his mouth. But go back and read what he said, and really think about the mind behind the words. Then think about where he is currently living, and what society, what ideas he owes a debt of gratitude.

The US is the only country to use such destructive bombs ( and they were weak compared to what we have today) so, get off the he said and probably means this stuff. Let's clean up our own house before we start condemning everyone else. Until we in the US are willing to get rid of all our bombs, I'm going to stand by the equal treatment principle. If one has nuclear power how can they oppose others from having it, since all sides give self defense as a justification?

I concur with your statement 110%, I was blown up 8 times in iraq, who was the cardio-thorasic surgeon that cut me open and tried to patch me up not an american doctor but a palistinian that fled to Syria. Reap the benefits of this terrible nation that we live in get rich, and flog us for what we stand for. This really fires me up!

What, exactly, do we stand for? I'm curious to know what you think we stand for. Because I think we stand for whatever makes us money. And by us, I don't mean - to use a tired phrase - Joe Plumber.

We stand for equal rights and human rights? Which is why we treat gays and lesbians equally and with equal rights. Which is why we allow employers to hire illegal immigrants and pay them atrociously (admittedly changing, thank you). Which is why we support countries that benefit us economically, though they have horrible - absolutely atrocious - human rights records.

We stand for diplomacy? Unfortunately, we do not. And since we seem to ignore international treaties, we don't seem to stand for much.

We stand for torture. We stand for lies. We stand for ignorance.

This is not how it should be, but it is - according to our actions during the past 8 years - what we stand for.

Should it anger you that I say this? You bet your booties it should. It angers me, too. The evidence is damning. However much you want to say that what we've done is good - it isn't. We've ruined our country for a war that was based on lies. Now we're supposed to believe that Iran (which ironically stands in between Afghanistan and Iraq) is working on WMD's. As if we are nation that gets to decide who gets to do what. Although a certain unmentionable said "I'm the decider!", we are not the law. We are the enemy. We created Israel, and we've been stuck up their butts for the past 50 years. We ignore the human rights abuses they inflict upon Palestinians. We created Bin Laden. Now we reap the benefits. We created this with our constant meddling and now we're supposed to simply meddle more? Because it's a threat to Israel? Because we get to tell other countries what they can and can not do?

This is not the ideals and principles this country was founded on. Our policies have not been true to this for quite some time. What you and I think this country stands for is not what our government's actions have proven them to be.

Iran has a right to do what it chooses with it's energy plans. They also have a right to build a nuclear bomb. Maybe if we hadn't meddled in the affairs of the Middle East for a generation or so, there wouldn't be this huge mess to contemplate and discuss, nor countries to illegally invade or even think about illegally invading.

a complete liar, and hypocrt.. quite a sound idiot too.

Yes, you read it right! The language we have spoken with them violates any/all accepted international norms and we have declared war on them - in fact we have imposed an 8-year war through our then friend Mr. Hussain with over a million-dead. We toppled their democratically elected government in 1953 and imposed 28 years of smear propaganda and unilateral sanctions and hundreds of other nasty tactics which takes a thick volume of a book to describe.

I am by no means an Iranian sympathizer. Simply, I believe in fairness and logic.

What I refered to as "savages" are the neocon policy makers and Think Tanks armchair geniuses who put us in this mess that we are in.

FYI - even thousands of nuclear devices on the "back of a donkey" will not kill us all. I did serve in Vietnam and I do not hail from Los Angeles.

Persians have a saying: "Speak The Same Language As You Are Spoken With". Western powers - most pronounced by US - speak and act with rules of jungle. The only language these savages - including their THink Tank geniuses understand is their own language.

Pull out of all international treaties established by Western Powers including United Nation and call them for a real fight - that is the only way Persian could secure their independence for centuries to come.
