To see how government-regulated Internet coverage would be like for the U.S., we need to look more at what Australia, which is roughly the same size in area and is sparsely populated (and yet not even as much as in America). Australia's system, which started out more with nationalized telecommunications (through Telstra) has led to some of the worst connectivity, particularly for the cost, among OECD nations.
There's technically no right answer to this. Depending on your ideology, you'll see more benefits in one or the other. However, let's not call something "free" when it definitely isn't.

Facts are facts - there are development, installation and maintenance costs to the internet which must be borne by someone. Those costs do not magically disappear simply because one wants the internet to be free to the end-user. While you have free use of the network, who do you propose will bear the costs of providing to you? If you insist that person will not be you, you demand that someone else pay for your consumption. Your demand effectively makes an involuntary slave of another which is not a right you possess or can possess.
I must admit, free access to the internet is very attractive. I would love to see such a freeflow of information around the world to whoever asks for it. That is a utopia of which I would gladly become a part. Nevertheless, the problem of the costs of such a "free" system must be considered and resolved without imposing slavery on even one individual human being lest such a system become not a dream .. but a nightmarish monster.
If someone wants to provide free internet, then let them. We get free TV, and that is because of commercials. Seems to me with all the spam, we already get the internet commercials.
Most of it is because the drug company allows Viagra to be peddled there. Why not let the manufacturers of Viagra pay for the internet?

There are always costs and someone always must pay. The issue is - who will that be .. and why?
I'll start by saying that I believe the Internet has the power to save society by realizing formerly impossible human relations and its ability to rapidly transfer information that can be more effectively censored in other media. That said, it should not be free! There is no incentive to develop better technology when there is no profit motive, just like any other industry. As it is, it's presently not too hard to get free broadband access through universities and libraries. If you want the good stuff, you have to pay for it!

Is curiosity not an incentive? What about progress? Recognition? There are people out there that are going to invent and create whether they are being paid to or not. There are numerous artists out there that continue to make art that don't get paid for it. I do agree that it is currently not too hard to get free broadband access, though. But, still, our tax money is funding those libraries, so I don't see why it shouldn't fund internet , as well. The internet is, really, equatable to a library and it is the future of information.
