Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas continued auditioning for his very own FOX News hosting gig on Wednesday when he weighed in on the current insurance-contraceptives-Catholicism debate raging in Washington.
Unsurprisingly, Thomas -- a proud supporter of the Tea Party and consistent defender of liberty -- isn’t too keen on Catholic institutions (i.e. schools and hospitals) being forced by the government to offer insurance coverage for women’s contraceptives.
As per his Facebook account:
“I Stand with the Catholics in the fight for Religious Freedom.
"In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up."
-- by Martin Niemoller, prominent German anti-Nazi theologian and Lutheran pastor, best known as the author of the poem First they came..”
So there you go.
Thomas has never been too ambiguous when it comes to his personal social views, and clearly this hot-button issue is no exception.
If you’re not a hockey fan (and let’s face it, who is?) but think that Thomas’ name sounds mighty familiar, it could be because he was recently mired in some other political controversy. A few weeks back, his world champion Bruins squad visited the White House and met President Barack Obama. Thomas opted not to make the trip, noting that he disagreed with the POTUS’ policies and political ideology. That created somewhat of a stir, for whatever reason.
What do you think: is Thomas' nonstop need to broadcast his political positions on whatever the issue of the moment is that day a good thing or bad thing? And let’s take it one step further: are his positions met with more vitriol than they should be because they’re entirely conservative, right-wing viewpoints?
