Water belongs to the entire community, nation, and world. Simply because a company owns the land that the water is being pumped from doesn't mean they own the water that is being drained from the ground supply. When the lakes and rivers around the well where bottled water is being produced experience a significant drop in water levels, there is a problem. It is a major problem that isn't being addressed. The consumers right to drink bottled water is a right that does not exist. The right to live on land that isn't being drained of its life support is a right that is not being protected. There are alternatives to drinking bottled water. There is no alternative to replacing water that bottled water companies steal.

If you're going to pump the groundwater out of a 25 mile radius without owning all the land you're stealing the water. From shoes to bottled water, these things cost little to make and a lot to buy. Plus "worth" is such arbitrary term in the first place. The closest thing to a definition that I can come up with for the worth of a thing is: Something is worth as much as people are willing to pay for it.
To add to that, in a capitalist society if you are able to raise the price of water and still be a competitive company, then it would seem that it is worth it to the consumer. If a company were to raise the price to 100 dollars, the company would see a sharp drop in sales. Simply, if it's not worth it, don't buy it; but people still buy bottled water because they seem to think the peace of mind of knowing your water is clean and the convenience of being able to carry it around is worth it.
Like I say, worth is such an arbitrary term in the first place so it's hard to come up with a definitive yes or no. But with the way I define it: Yes, it is worth it.

If on a journey or an outing you can never find a place to refill a thermos with clean water, then God help the nation, we're all doomed to die of giardia. All/most of the arguments I'm reading here are of the 'water is healthy/water is better than sugar drinks/we need bottled water when we're away from home' variety. Of course water is healthy and of course it's great to have water when we're away from home.
So here's an idea.. ready? Why not bring water with you? Instead of giving your kids bottle after bottle of water each time he/she goes to a youth sports game, why not fill a bottle or stainless steel container with water? Since I grew up in a time when we all drank tap water, the idea of keeping bottled water in the home seems a bit ridiculous to me. However, it does have its place. To embellish upon your suggestion of giving your kids a re-fillable water bottle/container taken from home - during hot weather,you can add ice which will keep it nice and cold.
I will say though that bottled water does have its place - such as during emergencies, earthquakes, floods, war-torn areas, etc. In addition, with the new airline regulations,you cannot bring your own water past the security check-in. I personally would not risk having germs from the spiggot spill into my water bottle. Too many people put their hands and mouths on it. First of all, I live in Florida where summer temps stay in the high 90s. A stainless steel container (unless it holds several gallons) isn't enough to last more than an hour or so. Plus, I don't really feel like carrying around something that heavy when I can get a few lightweight plastic (100% recyclable) water bottles and toss them in my ice chest.
Likewise, when I'm on the road, I could fill up a stainless steel container, but what happens when it runs out? There are a lot of places where the water is safe, but it tastes like rotten eggs. Do I really have to turn my vehicle into a water truck?
Nope. I'll continue to drink from my tap when I'm home and enjoy a nice bottle of water when I'm away. Thank God I have that choice. Otherwise, I'd probably end up buying Diet Cokes (in a plastic bottle) or Gatorade (in a plastic bottle).
Buy several bottles of water (or empty plastic bottles) and then re use them by filling with tap water. That's what I do and it's a lot smarter than buying new bottles every time.
The plastic in those bottles breaks down. It's far more economical AND safer to buy one water container made specifically for that purpose than to use a plastic water bottle that is made for one time use.
Jim, nobody is saying that you should NEVER use purchased bottles of water. But I can't tell you the number of times I see parents give their children bottled water to bring to childrens' sportiing events AND they are giving it to them from their home. These same people usually have filtered water in their home, but they still use purchased bottles. So use common sense, that's all I'm saying.
So, I vote that buying bottled water is worth the cost. It's worth the cost for my health, the health of my family and future generations. We who include bottled water as part of a healthy lifestyle will potentially be around to engineer a line of completely bio-degradable bottles for future drinkers of bottled water.
I drink plenty of water everyday and never buy a bottle of water and I drink alot about 1 litter sometimes 1 and a half to two on days I work out so I know it can be done.
Instead of buying bottled water, take the bottles you already have, wash them and refill them with tap water. The water will be just as healthy and convenient as buying bottled water and it will cost you far less.
