As an adult with ADHT, I cannot agree that it is being overdiagnosed. If anything, it's underdiagnosed. Many people, such as Conservative parents try to raise their kids with "tough love" which never works, because the child isn't behaving badly, he/she has a MEDICAL CONDITION. I have a family member with autism , and he turned out very well because his parents were educated people who saw that he got to see the right doctors early in life.

As for me, I owe my life to the doctors and psychiatrists who treated me as a child. I beat the odds, and never engaged in criminal or anti-social behaviour, which many UNTREATED ADHT cases do. I am a successful, stable adult. I don't know where I'd be today without Ritalin and behavioural therapy.

I have had some old school docs tell me that in a lot of cases when it comes to children in school that it can be handled mostly by discipline . I had a teacher diagnose my child with ADD before, and "required" me to have my child put on medication . This particular doctor was of the opinion that the teacher needs to quit playing doctor and do some teaching. He went on to say that if teachers now a days would take charge of their classrooms some problems would be fixed fairly easily. But, teachers will not discipline kids anymore. His opinion on how to handle my childs perceived "ADD" was to tell her to sit down, be quiet and pay attention or have consequences. I cant say that I disagree with him, in the fact that he uses medications as a last resort only.

However, not knowing what to do at that time I requested that she be put on the meds, against the doctors wishes. I allowed her to try it for 3 months and there was absolutely no change, except that her weekend sports performances were suffering. I then went to the school and picked up the meds. Not 45 minutes later, my phone is ringing with an irate teacher demanding me to bring back the meds, because my daughter really needs them. I simply told her to take charge and tell her to sit down and be quiet, and if she could not handle that then I would come sit in on her class and do her job for her. I never heard another word about it again.

My daughter was 'diagnosed' with ADHD by not only her teacher, but also a counselor at the school . They "strongly recommended" that I put her on medication . Any child that can sit in her room for hours at a time reading the latest Harry Potter Novel without interruption doesn't have AHDH. She was getting into trouble in school, but we later learned that it was due to not being challenged and simply being bored. The work that the teacher was assigning for the class that would take the other children all day to complete, she was finishing within minutes and had nothing to do afterward. The sad part was that instead of finding this out, they immediately determined that she had AHDH and needed medication. The next year her father and I had her enrolled in a Charter school that worked with gifted children and that solved the problem.

I have no doubt that there are children out there that benefit from medication, and may very well need it. The problem that I see with this is that these medications are stimulants in the same classification as cocaine . And I can't see anyone giving their child cocaine, even though in all actuality it would potentially have the same effects.

The lack of study on how these drugs will effect our children in the long-term is another scary thing to think about. The human brain is a complicated electrical system, and logic tells me that long-term use of these medications will have lasting damage that we cannot foresee. There needs to be a demand for further studies and alternative methods of treatment .

Being a person with ADHD and knowing several family members and friends that have ADD or ADHD I strongly beleive that it is not overdiagnosed. I have meen on medication since I was five years old, I have been both on the medications and off. I have been on both Ritalin and Adderall in several different forms. Without the medication I am lost I can not focus and if someone gives me a list of tasks to do verbally I freak out and shut down. If a student is properly tested and determined to have ADD/ADHD than they deserve to have the help of medications. I do agree with you on the side effects of those drugs on people. They are extremely dangerous especially for someone who is just taking them to bet high or to lose weight. I have taken a lot of different medications throughout my life to find the one that best suits my specific type of ADHD and probably will until I feel I am in full control of my ADHD. I do not plain on taking these medications for the rest of my life. In fact I hate the medications that the doctor gives me, they have made me tired, dizzy, lose all want to eat causing me to look like a shrimp (which I really hate), and the headaches. To counterbalance the risk of being life dependant on these pills I do go to therapy once a week (this is recently started) in order to start finding alternatives to pills. I am active in yoga which is often a great challenge to me because my body wants to move but I discipline myself and overcome that want. Also when I do not have something important to work on I do not take the medication. And honestly if I were not in school I really do not think I would be taking medication, and the knowledge that I have gained over my life in controlling my life would be all the help I need. But I am a student, I have tried to do without taking medications but what i find is I am doing everything that can possibly be done except learning. I can deal with the side effects for a few more years until I graduate but for now I am going to take them. Cause come on it is hard for a person without ADD/ADHD to sit through a lecture, imagine if you had to sit through that lecture and all you could focus on is trying to figure out where that sound is coming from.

Which means humans as a whole are either becoming more drug resistant (likely from trace amounts of such drugs ending up in the environment or water supplies) or the drugs the pharmaceutical companies are pushing are no better than the drugs they made 40 years ago yet they are compelled to keep making different formulas that do the same thing because of patents so they can force overly expensive medications on a populace.
