Floyd Mayweather’s Revenge: Manny Pacquiao is Unnecessary Again

We spoke too soon, America.

Last week we pointed out on Opposing Views that Floyd Mayweather Jr. had been eerily silent regarding how many pay-per-view (PPV) buys he did in his September showdown against Victor Ortiz.

You remember, the one that ended with the legal sucker punch heard around the world. Yeah, that one.

We suggested that perhaps Mayweather was being silent because he hadn’t done as well as many thought he would. That perhaps the man who has built his career on conquering the boxing world via his irresistible guy you love to hate persona had finally taken it too far and alienated the folks who would otherwise pay to see him fight.

As it turns out, that was not the case.

In response to the storm we created last week, Mayweather and his team released the numbers for the Ortiz fight and, be warned, they’re very, very good. All in all, 1.25 PPV buys were made to watch the undefeated champ pummel Ortiz for the better part of four rounds – an intake that’s worth somewhere in the $78 million range.

Not bad for a guy nobody wants to see.

The numbers were just a tick lower than the 1.3 million PPV buys that Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley generated. And, to be fair, Top Rank boss Bob Arum has already come out on record and said that he expects to topple Mayweather’s recent total.

“We’re looking at huge numbers because this fight is going to be another classic,” said Arum of Pacquiao’s looming November 12 showdown against Juan Manuel Marquez.

The really interesting part of Mayweather revealing his numbers, though, is that it once again takes the ball out of his court. He no longer needs to actively seek out a fight against Pacquiao because, obviously, he can generate enough fight interest against a nobody like Ortiz without a second major draw. Essentially, the notion that Mayweather needs Pacquiao for a big payday is officially dead.

Already, the reverberations from the announcement are being felt. When pressed on how he thinks Mayweather’s most recent totals will impact negotiations for a potential superfight, Pacquiao made a damning statement.

“I’m sure he will ask for a bigger share,” said Pacquiao, via PhilStar. “But that will never happen. I won’t even agree to a fifty-fifty split with him.”

To say that 50-50 is the off the table is the equivalent of saying, “I won’t negotiation with him – period.” There is no way Mayweather would accept anything less than a fair, equal split and, frankly, there is no reason should have to.

With his latest showing against Ortiz, the undefeated Mayweather proved that he’s as big a draw as there is in the sport – and that he doesn’t need Pacquiao to make money anymore than Pacquiao needs him.

You know Floyd is suppose to make an announcement about who is gonna fight in May. They, his management team, indicates it's gonna be big. But if it ain't Manny or Sergio Martinez or At least Amir Khan, it won't be big.

Pacquaio vs Mosley fight didn't sell no where near 1 million buys and thats why the official numbers were never released. Hey fuddleduddle, you need to do your research because during the second negotiations, Mayweather gave Pacquaio a 14 day cut off prior to the fight and Pacquaio reneged. After the second negotiations broke off again, due to testing, Mayweather specifically told Pacquaio you either take the 14 day cut off now or next time it wont be offered. This fight would have happened 2 years ago if Manny would have capitulated to Un-notified blood test. Bob Arum owes Mayweather money from the Mayweather vs Gatti and Mayweather vs Judah fights. Mayweather should get 100 million for the fight, if they charge the public 100 dollars for the fight, both camps could get payed. The fight between Pacquaio vs Mayweather has all ways been about, is Manny the guy who could beat Mayweather and not the other way around. Why do you think Pacquaio started fighting Mayweathers left overs? Bob Arum has marketed Pacquaio to be in the same sentence as Mayweather, even tho I feel Manny's name shouldn't be in the same sentence as Mayweather. Pacquaio refuses to fight tough fights, he either waits for them to loose before he fights them, and when Manny do fight a Cotto, Margarito, De La Hoya and Mosley, he dehydrates his opponents and force them to not rehydrate by having a rehydration clause in the contract. Manny forced Cotto to put his championship belt on the line for their dehydration/no rehydration for Cotto fight. If manny is so great he would beat fighters at their best and not at their worse. De La Hoya was so drained for his fight with Pacquaio the fight almost didn't happen, the doctor had to give De La Hoya I-V the night of the fight leading up to the fight because he was so weak. Pacquaio blames Mayweather for negotiating outside of the boxing commissions rules but Pacquaio is doing the same thing. During the last negotiations, Pacquaio chose the ring size, glove size, weight size and told Mayweather that he couldn't come into the fight weighing over 147 pounds or else Mayweather would have to give Pacquaio 10 million dollars per a pound thats over the 147 weight limit, Mayweather said yes and agreed. Mayweather only asked Pacquaio to take random urine and blood test leading up to the fight and Pacquaio reneged. Pacquaio wants to be notified 48 hours in advance to be tested and a 14 day cut off date prior to the fight. If USADA was just doing urine test this fight will happen immediately, so the question is, if your clean why is there a problem with random blood test. Pacquaio could fight Marquez at 140 pounds, so why is Pacquaio fighting Marquez at a weight that the public and experts said Marquez didn't carry well when Marquez was out boxed by Mayweather. Pacquaio wants to give himself every advantage even when it's not needed.

Pacquiao vs Marquez PPV buys will surpass May weather number after this fight. Then what's going to happen is next year Mayweather won't be able to find a suitable fighter so he won't fight at all next year. Manny will fight twice maybe once next year and he will leave Mayweather PPV numbers in the dust. Mayweather will come up with some other excuse. He will try to fight Andre Berto or some other guy he has an advantage over but they won't buy it.

The quotes you provided are 100% inaccurate and bogus. Get your facts straight or stop making stuff up to write.

My statements are accurate, 100% I went to three different resources and they all report the same thing. Don't hate you scrub, next weekend Manny will be passing Floyd in career PPV buys. The facts are Floyd doesn't fight enough to have good PPV. His clones buy his fights so he boost his ego. Go do your own fact checking, else disappear like a ghost.

Since when did Pacquiao say he didn't agree to a 50/50 split? Do you have any proof of this? Top Rank negotiated a deal to bring the fight to Singapore awhile back for 100 million and by all accounts Manny agreed to a 50/50 split plus blood testing 14 days. Mayweather did not, and wanted the whole 100 million to himself. Which is another way of saying that Mayweather doesn't want the fight.

Don't kid yourself, Mayweather still needs this fight.
Pacquiao easily beat the last three fighters Mayweather has fought before Ortiz. The public needs to see this fight to see if Mayweather can beat Pacquiao. The showdown needs to take place for Mayweather to claim his rights as pound for pound, but what is he doing? He sure doesn't act like a top pound for pound fighter.

On another note sure Golden Boy conveniently released the so called ppv numbers due to public dismay, which I believe can still be scrutinized. Golden Boy's credibility is also questionable. The whole lot of them are known to conveniently lie to save face as Ross Greenburg would attest. Not to mention De La Hoya's questionable activities outside of boxing. Need I say more? They also didn't sell out the gate like Pacquiao/Marquez has. So that's another reason to disbelieve.

I agree 100%, it does not matter whether or not Mayweather can make good money without Pacquiao. The truth of the matter is this fight would be good for boxing and would really further establish these two fighters as all time Hall of Fame greats. Boxing needs this fight and if it does not happen it can be bad for boxing. Yes, I am a Pacquiao fan and can not stand Mayweather. However, I will give Mayweather props and recognize him as the number 1 pound for pound. I will be the first to admit that Mayweather has tremendous skill and wit in the ring. Outside the ring is a different story. So if Mayweather does not fight him, he will be seen as a coward, while Pacquiao has faced the tougher opponents and has been in more grueling/exciting fights. Mayweather still has something to prove, and he can not say he is the number 1 pound for pound best until he fights Pacquiao.

correct. how can he be the best when he didnt even try to beat the best.. to me floyd jr looks good from a cherry picked opponent, but facing tougher opponents surely floyds gonna taste the canvas one way or another. reason he's in his semi retirement status. he jumps to his semi retirement hole to hide from legitimate challenges and if finds an opportunity to earn he goes out and fights a sure win and in this phony performance everyone rejoices. floyd is a performing artist inside and outside the ring. a con artist. get him face someone like pacquiao and you will expose him, he knows that, thats why he's got tons of demands on pacquiao.

Who's the better fighter between Pacquiao and Mayweather Jr.? ! ?..The world will never know...Let's ask Mr.Owl.

There Can Be Only One.
