2010 NBA Orlando Summer League Preview: New Jersey Nets

The New Jersey Nets have a lot to look forward to this season.  They have a brand new owner in Mikhail Prokhorov, a new head coach in Avery Johnson, the third overall pick in Derrick Favors, and as of now are still in the running for LeBron James or another marquee free agent.  The Nets were a complete disaster last season, but should certainly bounce back this year with the new upgrades.

The Nets summer league roster has some great rookies including draft picks Derrick Favors, and Damion James, as well as free agents Lance Thomas, Ben Uzoh, and Brian Zoubek.

Derrick Favors and Damion James will certainly be featured in the offense along with second year player Terrence Williams, but look for Brian Zoubek to make an impact. Zoubek’s college career wasn’t too impressive as has struggled with injuries early on at Duke.  However, things changed his senior year as his health improved and his minutes increased.   He was a key contributor during Duke’s National Championship run.

Although Zoubek may be athletically challenged, the seven footer was a physical presence for the Blue Devils setting punishing screens to free up Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler.  He’s also great on the glass, pulling in over seven rebounds a game, nearly half of them being offensive. Offensive rebounding means more shots, and teams are always looking for extra possessions.

If Zoubek can show he’s capable of hauling them in at the next level, a roster spot is surely available.  The Nets have already committed to him with a deal that is likely partially guaranteed.
