Writer Joe Eszterhas: Mel Gibson Hates Jews and was Glad John Lennon got Shot

The screenwriter responsible for Basic Instinct is lashing out at his writing partner on the forthcoming film about Jewish warriors, tentatively titled The Maccabees.

Joe Eszterhas (left) wrote a fiery, nine-page letter excoriating Mel Gibson (right). According to Eszterhas’ letter, through collaborating with Gibson on the Maccabees project, Eszterhas realized that Gibson was sabotaging the film out of his alleged hatred for Jews.

Eszterhas also claims that Gibson told him he was happy that John Lennon got shot, accusing the Beatles of having a “messiah complex.”

“You continually called Jews ‘Hebes’ and ‘oven-dodgers’ and ‘Jewboys,’” Eszterhas writes, addressing Gibson. “It seemed that most times when we discussed someone, you asked ‘He’s a Hebe, isn’t he?’ You said most ‘gatekeepers’ of American companies were ‘Hebes’ who ‘controlled their bosses.’”

Perhaps his most damning accusation is that Gibson only wanted to be involved in The Maccabees so that he could convert the Jews to Christianity.

Gibson, no stranger to accusations of bigotry, responded to Eszterhas’ letter saying: “'I have your letter. I am not going to respond to it line by line, but I will say that the great majority of the facts as well as the statements and actions attributed to me in your letter are utter fabrications. I would have thought that a man of principle, as you purport to be, would have withdrawn from the project regardless of the money if you truly believed me to be the person you describe in your letter. I guess you only had a problem with me after Warner Brothers rejected your script.”
