Video: Movie Trailer for The Pirates! Band of Misfits

There is a new trailer for Aardman Animations new movie, The Pirates! Band of Misfits. Everything we’ve already shown you has been funny, clever and mostly adorable, if you’re a fan of stop-motion animation. (And I am.) It definitely has potential. This new trailer, which seeks to parody The Hunger Games, I have to admit, is not as funny, clever or adorable as those that have come before, but it is topical.

I’m not sure if the trend began with The Muppets and their series of hilarious and very clever parody trailers and posters, but in terms of marketing this sort of light-hearted fare, I like it. The Muppets, however, set the bar pretty high. “The World Will Be Pirating” just doesn’t have the same ring as “The World Will Be Watching.”

Pirate Captain (Hugh Grant) sets out on a mission to defeat his rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Pivan) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayak) for the Pirate of the year Award. The quest takes Captain and his crew from the shores of Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London, where they meet Charles Darwin (David Tennant) among others.

In the UK, this movie was called The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists. Apparently that was too much for us eedjits here on these shores. Whatever it's called, it looks like bloody great fun. Other great character actors providing voices include Brendan Gleeson as Pirate with Gout, Martin Freeman as Pirate with Scarf, Imelda Staunton as Queen Victoria and Ashley Jensen as Surprisingly Curvaceous Pirate. The Pirates! Band of Misfits is now playing in the UK and opens in the US on April 27.
