Austin Rivers is the most polarizing star Duke has had in years. Because his game is better-suited for the professional ranks than the college game, some of what he’s best at didn’t translate to Coach K’s team like folks may have initially anticipated it would. And of course, not living up to people's preconceived notions is a death sentence in college sports.
Nevertheless, as we pointed out many months ago, the kid is a baller. He’s got that it-factor that can’t be taught and is inherently found in superstars like Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade, no question about it. On Wednesday night, as he led his Duke squad back from ten down on the road in hostile terrain versus the hated Tar Heels, Rivers put what he can do on full display for the world to see.
With his team down by two and the seconds winding down, Rivers wound up hitting a clutch three over North Carolina behemoth Tyler Zeller to give the Blue Devils a one point lead with all zeroes on the clock. Game over. Duke wins.
Not bad for a freshman.
