Touching Photo: Dog Stands by Fallen Comrade

LA PUENTE, CA -- Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control officials are heralding the loyalty of a black Labrador Retriever that braved traffic to stay by another dog that was fatally struck by a car.

In a photo released on Saturday April 14, 2012, the loyal Black Lab is shown braving traffic to stand by her friend, who was fatally injured in a busy street in La Puente, California, last Wednesday.

Animal Care officers took her to the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center, where it was hoped the owner would claim the dog. She appears to have had good care, but so far, her owner has not come for her, according to a report by the Associated Press.

A motorist saw the dogs on the La Puente street Wednesday morning and put down traffic cones to alert other drivers and shot video of the dogs. The video released Saturday showed the female Labrador standing next to a motionless tan Shepherd as vehicles pass dangerously close to them.

Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control officials say the 2-year-old Black Lab has been named Grace by animal shelter staff and volunteers, but, since her owners have not come forward to claim her, she is being made available for adoption.

A Facebook posting  by the person who stopped and put out the cones to protect her and the other dog and who also kindly stayed to comfort Grace in the street states that she was scared but very gentle.
