About a week after Drew Stanton signed with the New York Jets under the presumption that he would be the squad’s No. 2 quarterback, he has apparently been bumped to third string.
Last Friday, before Peyton Manning decided to join the Denver Broncos and -- in the process -- send Tim Tebow packing, the Jets appeared to shore up a couple of weaknesses when they signed Stanton and wide receiver Chaz Schilens. The moves weren’t flashy and came with very little fanfare, but they clearly plugged holes that New York needed to plug this offseason.
After adding Stanton, Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum reportedly told him that he would absolutely be the team’s backup heading into the new year.
“The person they just signed to be their No. 2 quarterback, Drew Stanton, he was promised by General Manager Mike Tannenbaum that they weren’t going to get any other quarterbacks, that they weren’t going to draft a quarterback or get a Tim Tebow,” Jason La Canfora said on NFL Network (via ProFootballTalk).“That’s how they lured Stanton there, with the allure of ‘You’re our No. 2.’”
On Thursday, six days after making the aforementioned moves and pledges, the Jets traded for Tim Tebow. Here is what Tannenbaum told the media after making that deal (via PFT):
“Mark Sanchez is, has been and will be our starting quarterback,” Tannenbaum said. “We’re adding Tim to be our backup and be used in other packages.”
Needless to say, Stanton was not overcome with joy upon hearing he had been unceremoniously bumped down the depth chart. According to the New York Daily News, he now wants out.
“The Daily News has learned that Stanton would prefer to be released or traded after the team acquired Tim Tebow on Wednesday. Stanton, who spent four seasons with the Lions, signed a one-year, $1.25 million deal that included a $500,000 signing bonus last week. He would rather be released, but he'd be amenable to a trade, according to a source.”
Between John Elway lying to Tebow and Tannenbaum lying to Stanton, you almost get the impression that these NFL executives will say anything to improve their team.
It's shocking.

Not suggesting it's right for the Jets to lie out-and-out to a player to sign him, but usually the way you get to be the #2 QB is to beat out the #3 for the job.
