Should the U.S. Sit Down With Its Enemies?

Ever since British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's disastrous decision to appease Adolf Hitler in the build-up to World War II, every U.S. president has been forced to consider when they should sit down and negotiate with their enemies. With the threat of a nuclear armed Iran looming, when should the U.S. pass the chalice of diplomacy and break bread with our enemies? Is there ever a right time?

Thanks for this post. I definitely agree with what you are saying. I have been talking about this subject a lot lately with my father so maybe this will get him to see my point of view

ya they should with iran , after all the US covert operations put the US-advocating Shah back in power, after trading with them in the Iran-Contra affair , Iran is a place the US should be embarassed about.

If we don't engage in diplomacy with other countries, we will never be able to fix anything. In case you haven't noticed, other people aren't exactly welcoming if we send in our military to invade their country. Ignoring them until they do what we want isn't working out so well either. Talking to other world leaders is the only way to change things.

It sounds like both experts agree that the answer to this is ultimately, "sometimes, and with great caution." Nobody's going to say seriously that the US should never ever enter diplomatic talks with anyone not already a close ally, or that the US should negotiate with anyone for anything under any circumstances (hardly, at that point, a negotiation -- more like surrender). Both sides appear to have come to very similar middle ground, albeit with slightly different rhetoric. Unless the sides turn into specific stances that are more debatable based on those very specifics (say, should the next president negotiate with Iran, assuming nothing changes between now and then?) it seems to me that the debate is basically over.

Ask anyone in Israel and they'll tell you that the Palestinians, Iranians, Sryians, etc. don't want to talk, they want to wipe Israel and the US off the map.

Ask Iranians if they will give up their nuclear program. Their answer has clearly been a "NO".

Ask that same question to the North Koreans, you'll get a half-hearted, "We'll see.." and have no intention of doing anything.

The short answer is that these kinds of people will not listen. They're not out to talk, they're out to kill or be in power. Diplomacy in situations like North Korea and Iran have failed, and yet I still wonder why we continue to discuss these issues with them. If military action is what my president (Bush or McCain/Obama) decides, then I will follow.

The situation has been dealt to us so that we, the US, are the police on planet Earth. We help the helpless, defend the defensless, attack the attackers; and yet if this was a real criminal (like a drug lord or something), we would have taken these guys out years ago. Actions speak louder than words, and right now, I believe that is one of our only options.
