Report: Floyd Mayweather vs. Saul Canelo Alvarez Scheduled for May 5

Floyd Mayweather Jr. will reportedly put his undefeated record on the line against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on May 5, 2012.

Mayweather made it no secret that May 5 was his desired fight date this year, and up until he went and got our hopes up regarding a potential bout versus Manny Pacquiao, Alvarez was the opponent most had pegged him squaring off against. The WBC Light Middleweight champ obviously fits the necessary qualifications for a fight on Cinco de Mayo, so it stands to reason that Mayweather would go this route.

According to Tim Sladeck of MP8.ph (Pacquiao’s official site), a fight between Mayweather and Alvarez is reportedly a done deal. As per his report:

I just received a text message from a top member of Team Pacquiao- He stated to me it has been confirmed.

Manny Pacquaio will be fighting Timothy Bradley on June 9th 2012

Floyd Mayweather Jr will be fighting Canelo Alvarez on May 5th 2012

Let the Festivities begin.

Just a note of warning – this report has not been independently verified by us.

Given everything we know about Mayweather’s plans to fight on May 5th and the potential opponents that he’s been rumored to be considering, this report makes sense. Then again, while I’d trust Pacquiao’s official site to report on their guy’s next opponent, I’m a little wary of how they’d know what lays ahead for their guy’s arch rival.

For now, this is what's out there.

Stay tuned to Opposing Views, though – we’ll try to officially figure out what’s what and get confirmation as soon as possible.
