Pistons Jason Maxiell Makes a Big Business Move

Detroit Pistons forward Jason Maxiell has changed agents. He was formerly represented by KMG Sports Management, but recently made the switch to Andy Miller of ASM Sports. Maxiell was originally drafted by the Pistons in the first round (#26 overall) in 2005. He played his college ball at Cincinnati.

As of writing this post, KMG Sports Management still lists Maxiell as a client. The website’s basketball clientele page features Maxiell as the first player listed, and the general website has the displays the following quote from Maxiell: “KMG is a great agency that I have always been able to count on for anything on or off the court. They work very hard and get the job done.” Apparently, that hard work was not enough for the company to retain Maxiell as a client.

It is difficult for a boutique agency like KMG Sports Management to rebound from the departure of a client like Maxiell. The agency was likely a good fit for Maxiell when he first entered the league; KMG Sports Management is located in the same city as where Maxiell went to college.

Maxiell is earning $5 million this year and has a $5 million player option for the 2012/13 season. The fact that he will soon be a free agent (or negotiating a new deal) likely played a role (in some fashion) regarding his decision to change agents.
