The stage was set for Ricky Rubio to collapse under the weight of his own hype in the Minnesota Timberwolves’ regular season debut on Tuesday night. For months now this young, unproven Spanish point guard has received the kind of buzz generally reserved for folks who don’t have the curse of David Kahn hanging over their little heads. Failure, unfortunately, seemed all but inevitable.
Shockingly enough, though, Rubio actually looked pretty good against a stout Oklahoma City Thunder defense in his first legitimate non-preseason NBA playing time of the year. All in all, he played a grand total of 26 minutes and picked up six points, six assists and five rebounds all the while not putting up a single turnover. The defense needs work but, if Tuesday night was any indication, Timberwolves fans (those exist, right?) have a lot to look forward to.
