MLB: Tigers Cabrera Arrested for DUI

You know how we hear these DUI stories about athletes and celebrities who get arrested when they weren’t really doing anything terribly wrong and they blew a 0.08 or something close to the legal limit?

This isn’t one of those stories.

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera was arrested at 11 PM on Wednesday in Lakeland, FL. He was spotted by police officers in a car on the side of the road with a smoking engine. The deputy noticed that Cabrera smelled like booze, was slurring his speech and, oh, he took a swig of scotch right out of the bottle in front of the cop. And didn’t offer him any! That alone could get you six months in the slammer. Failing to share booze!

This is a pretty big deal and his Tigers teammates aren’t thrilled about it.

“It’s hard,” said second baseman Carlos Guillen. “He’s a really good friend. I know he was working hard in the winter to have a good season this year.”

According to the police report, Cabrera was walking into the road with his hands up before he got cuffed. “Do you know who I am? You don’t know anything about my problems,” he said while also swearing at the cops.

Cabrera posted his $1,350 bond and was released just before 8 AM this morning.

Guillen couldn’t resist adding one last quote that made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

“I worry about him. He’s got a lot of talent,” Guillen said. “It’s tough for him, for us, for Venezuelans.”

What’s tough for Venezuelans? Not driving drunk? Not getting in trouble with the law? That statement makes no sense.
