Minor League Guy Steals Show at Cardinals vs. Mets Game

If you’re a die-hard sports fan, you were probably tuned into the NCAA basketball games this weekend. The Final Four is now set and tickets are punched to NOLA. NFL fans may have been trying to figure out what the hell the NY Jets are going to do with Tim Tebow or studying rounds one and two of the latest NFL Mock Draft. Those of you who play Fantasy Baseball may have even held your auction draft this weekend. I’m guessing however that what you weren’t doing was watching preseason MLB.

If you were one of the few watching the Cardinals-Mets game in Port St. Lucie on Saturday though, you may have seen #91, a St. Louis Cardinals prospect, come into the game and pinch run at third base in the top of the 9th of a 6-6 tie game. DeadSpin gave this kid a code name calling him Minor League Guy On Third.

So the question is…, who is this fine feathered red bird? You would think that the folks broadcasting the Cardinals game would have done a better job of trying to figure out who the guy was. Don’t try too hard guys…. Why bother with the players name?

How do you think this kid’s parents felt? What if he scored? It may have been the winning run. How would they have announced that? “And the Cardinals take the lead as minor league guy on third crosses the plate.” Thanks to our Sports Wagering Maharishi, Jake “All-In” Ciely, we’ve uncovered the mystery.

#91 is none other than Cardinals right field prospect Oscar Tavares. Last year Tavares hit .386 with 8 HR and 62 RBI in 78 games for A Quad Cities. According to RedBird Dugout, a St. Louis Cardinals Blog, the Cardinals kept the 19-year old in Quad Cities last season because they felt he had things that he needed to work on refining before he got promoted. Tavares is labeled as a decent prospect and won the league batting crown. He’s played the majority of his time in RF but he has played all three outfield spots and is viewed as a top of the order hitter.

So there you have it, the secret code has been broken. Ohh… I feel like Columbo!
