Mike D’Antoni Steps Down as Coach of New York Knicks

Well, that was fast.

Less than 24 hours after word leaked of just how much turmoil there currently was in the New York Knicks locker room, head coach Mike D’Antoni officially offered his resignation. According to Yahoo! Sports, D’Antoni and Knicks owner James Dolan agreed on Wednesday the best thing for all parties do moving forward would be to go their separate ways.

Assistant coach Mike Woodson will reportedly step in as interim head coach.

While D’Antoni leaving takes care of one major problem -- the apparent feud between him and superstar Carmelo Anthony -- it’s hardly the solution to all of New York’s woes. This team lacks any sort of cohesiveness, depth and apparent strengths. And while the now ex-coach’s style was admittedly not very well suited for the pieces he had at his disposal (namely: Anthony), it’s hard to envision a strategy that would effectively utilize all these guys.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Sam Amick, Jerry Sloan is a possibly candidate to coach New York next season.
