Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Update: Floyd Picks Cotto, Taunts Manny

About two seconds after he let the world know that he would face off against Miguel Cotto this May, Floyd Mayweather Jr. went back to talking about Manny Pacquiao.

As we reported on Opposing Views earlier today, Mayweather will take on Cotto come Cinco de Mayo. This match is fine, I suppose, but it also obviously won’t be anywhere nearly as intriguing or exciting to discuss as a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather bout would have been. And Mayweather knows this.

Because he’s such a master at manipulating the media and generating free press, he made sure to plug his arch rival on Twitter shortly after making his Cotto announcement. Predictably, we sports writers took the bait – hook, line and sinker.

Here is what he said on his Twitter account, via Larry Brown Sports:

What’s amazing is that despite the fact that both Pacquiao and Mayweather are entirely to blame for a superfight not coming together, both seem content messing with fans by dangling the possibility that one happening in the future. It’s a trick we’ve seen many, many times before; and yet, the prospect of this match is so alluring that it almost can’t be helped.

A few days ago, HBO Sports president Ken Hershman made news when he said that Pacquiao vs. Mayweather a “sell-by” date. He noted that if this match doesn’t happen at some point this year or early next, folks will view it as "less and less relevant."

But if Mayweather can still generate this kind of buzz just by name-dropping Pacquiao after all this time, is that sentiment truly accurate?

Manny Pacquiao is always IN Floyd Joy's mind, even in his sleep he thinks of Manny. This is so true because, he just can't avoid and have to bring up Manny's name where ever he goes. The ghost of Manny is always with him...And YES I agree that this dream fight is starting to get irrelevant " for me ". Losing attraction on both of their peformance and starting to flip coins on who I should pick between the 2..Starting to think that both parties are really secretly working to together.." It's hard for me to believe that Berto injured his arm/hand.
