As has become standard operating procedure when it comes to these sort of things, there are now conflicting reports as to who Manny Pacquiao will fight in his next bout. What is apparently certain, though, is that he has narrowed the options down to his longtime rival Floyd Mayweather Jr. and a man he has already once soundly defeated in Miguel Cotto.
Pacquiao made it no secret that this would be an important weekend for him. As we noted on Opposing Views earlier this week, the Filipino champion intended to take these couple of days to contemplate who he truly wanted to go against next – and also to prepare to let the world know what his decision ultimately would be.
We now have two different reports on who he has decided on.
According to Manny’s wife, Jinkee Pacquiao, her husband has told her that he plans to fight Mayweather in either May or June of this year. That latter option is off the table because of the undefeated superstar’s looming jail sentence, of course, but it stands to reason that Jinkee wouldn’t be up to date on all the latest details. She broke the news in a 24Oras interview with Nelson Canlas (via GMA News).
At the same time, Lem Satterfield of The Ring is reporting that Cotto has agreed to terms for a fight with Pacquiao. Satterfield left very little in the way of ambiguity as he broke the news:
RingTV.com has learned that WBA junior middleweight beltholder Miguel Cotto has agreed to the terms, other than resolving a few minor details, that will allow him to face Manny Pacquiao in a return bout on June 9 in Las Vegas at either the Thomas & Mack Center or the MGM Grand.
So there you have it. We now have two solid conflicting reports on the fate of Pacquiao vs. Mayweather.
On one hand, it’s odd that Jinkee would go out and break the news before her husband had a chance to tell the public in his own way. On the other hand, if anyone would know Manny and his plans best – it would undoubtedly be her.
Stay tuned to Opposing Views. We’ll have all of the latest for you as more news trickles in.
