Manny Pacquiao Opponent Juan Manuel Marquez Drinks Urine; Does it Help?

When Manny Pacquiao takes on Juan Manuel Marquez on November 12 for the third time in their epic series, he will be fighting a man who drinks his own urine.

"My urine is medicine because it has a lot of vitamins," Marquez told the Filipino news agency ABS-CBN News.

He claims urine contains the vitamins and protein a person takes in, so why waste them?

There are many believers in so called "urine therapy."

"Some people drink urine because they believe it has health benefits," Dr. Travis Stork, the host of the TV show "The Doctors" and an emergency room physician said on the show last year.

The New York Daily News wrote in 2010:

While drinking urine has been known to help people stay hydrated in emergency situations, and "urine therapy" advocate groups exist around the world, medical experts disagree about its benefits in everyday life.

Marquez is not the only sports figure who uses urine. Some baseball players also use it, except they don't drink it. This from ESPN.com back in 2005:

Baseball stars Moises Alou and Jorge Posada intentionally whiz on their own hands. The reason? Better batting grips. According to Posada, urine "keeps your hands from getting callused and cracking."

So now you know -- if you meet Alou or Posada, think twice about shaking their hands.
