So that first bit of news first.
The nearly-Nirvana recording is for the soundtrack to Dave Grohl’s documentary about Sound City Studios (where they made Nevermind). The news of the reunion came from producer and Garbage man Butch Vig’s Twitter, where he wrote:
“The last 24 hours have been surreal! Had a great gig at the El Rey last night, and spent today recording with Dave, Krist and special guest!”
We’ve no idea who the special guest was. Probably Paul Weller, he turns up at everything these days. Or one of the Magic Numbers.
The other news came via TV station Fuse (us neither) who spoke to Hole guitarist Eric Erlandson who told them this about Kurt’s future plans (before he stopped having a future):
"I was really excited about some of the stuff he was working on. I got to see him play it in front of me. That's why I was really sad when he died. He was cut short. Who knows where this music would have gone?"
As to whether the demos would see the light of day, Eric said:
“I just wish something would come together. I think the fans would be a lot happier. If nobody ever hears those songs, except for like three people, then that's the way it goes. I heard some talk about somebody putting together some raw, rough acoustic thing… I just hope that one day it will be released for fans."
He also revealed that one of the songs was a cover version: “It’s just so heartbreaking. It’s not surprising. It’s a very sweet, just touching song”.
Rumours that the 2012 Olympics Organisers have asked if Kurt would rejoin Nirvana for the opening ceremony are made up entirely by us.
