Impact of Manny Pacquiao’s Dumb Lawsuit v. Mayweather

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. both deserve blame for their all-talk, half-hearted efforts at putting a match together. Discussions have gone on long enough for both men to be held culpable. That being said, Pacquiao is not doing his reputation any favors by continuing to try to push away his would-be opponent with this undeniably dumb, completely ridiculous defamation suit.

Late last week, USA Today got its hands on court documents in which Pacquiao -- through his attorneys -- filed a motion in the U.S. District Court in Nevada urging for a default against Mayweather in their highly publicized defamation lawsuit. The defamation suit cited multiple examples of Mayweather and assorted members of his family alleging that Pacquiao used performance enhancing drugs (PEDs), an insulting claim that has never been substantiated in any way.

One of Pacquiao’s attorneys, Daniel Petrocelli, made it clear that the move was coming as a result of Mayweather’s refusal to show up on any of the 24 court dates offered to him over the last few months. Furthermore, Petrocelli noted that his team would seek more than $10 million damages -- plus attorney’s fees, of course -- from the case.

For his part, Mayweather maintains that he cannot make any of the scheduled court appearances because of the training sessions he has to participate in for a September 17 bout against Victor Ortiz at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Obviously, Mayweather’s defense is completely nonsensical. He could very easily find the time to go to court, and he’s simply using this convenient “training” excuse as just that – an excuse.

The problem, however, is that Pacquiao is prolonging this whole mess by insisting that Mayweather show up to court. What exactly is the point of this futile exercise? Does he really need $10 million of his undefeated counterpart’s money that badly? Are the rumors that Pacquiao isn’t as well off as some would assume true?

Pacquiao and Mayweather are in a very delicate predicament right now. Both are self-centered, annoying prima donnas who will get angry and walk away from negotiations at the slightest bump in the road. Yet, somehow, despite all that, negotiations have still progressed for over a year now. Even Top Rank boss, longtime Pacquiao ally Bob Arum has admitted that Mayweather has come off of some of his early demands in the spirit of getting a deal done.

Money is no longer a hurdle in putting this fight together. PED testing is still an issue, but not as big as it once was. Heck, the two sides -- Mayweather’s crazy uncle notwithstanding -- have even stopped yapping through the press. And now, with things finally going in the right direction, Pacquiao decides this is the opportune time to poke the tiger and take the defamation suit to the next level?

Now? Really?

Pacquiao knows exactly what he’s doing. He’s pushing this fight further and further away from the fans who are pining to see it. He’s trying to get under Mayweather’s skin in any way he can, when in truth, he should be worried about his own upcoming fight.

Once upon a time, Mayweather was to blame for the dream fight with Pacquiao not happening. His inflexibility regarding drug testing was a sticking point for way too long. But Pacquiao isn’t innocent in all this either. He purposely waited to agree to drug testing before weirdly agreeing to the original testing requirements at the exact moment when Mayweather asked for new, stiffer stipulations. His bizarre recent pronouncement that he doesn’t trust the USADA and would only submit drug testing to the WADA is equally bewildering.

Now, however, he’s taking it to a whole new level with this ludicrous defamation suit. If Mayweather calls off talks for a potential bout between the two because of Pacquiao’s incessant, childish demands for his attention in court, Pacquiao will be to blame for the most important boxing match in over a decade not being put together.

Time for Pacquiao to grow up.

@Sportscareercoach: hey stupid, asking something new aside from the original procedure will definitely piss anybody. It's like renewing your drivers license and there use to be only one mandatory drugtest before you will be given a new license, but instead, someone from the department picked you and asked you to have a random drug test 45 days before you renew your license and you have to stop everything that you're doing to go the place where they take your blood. (coz ur not a superstar, thats why you have to go instead of them coming for you). what will you think? is it acceptable? cmon, easy question answerable by yes or no.
2nd: what did he say thats worth being sued? are you really $tupid? have one of your nemesis appeared in television and radio and even blab on the internet that you are using drugs, not once but quite a few times, and thats the reason why you are what you are today. will it affect your image and will put doubt in every ones mind. and in manny's instance, a public figure in his hometown, idol to millions, have a lucrative contract to endorse, he will have a lot to lose. if you wanna know what he really said, just google it or leave a message so i can send you the link.

u are absolutely the dumbest person in the world of boxing and journalism .. commit suicide and die .. just die and go away .. u attention hound . the only reason why you wrote this article is so u can get comments and im going to oblige u by saying u freaking embicle . i hope u go swimming and a bacteria goes into one of your penile opening and infect your testicle and that nooooo dr can cure you but give you medicine which slowly keeps you alive while the bacteria eats u up slowly til one day you croak .. im done

On second thought, it might be good business sense to sell "TAKE THE DEPO, FLOYD" t-shirts and wear it at the May-Ortiz fight...Let May taste a dose of his own medicine.

Be a man Floyd, let the truth come out from your own mouth, show up in court. Be truthful, for once in your life. I am sooooooooooo positive, Floyd and his minions will again chant, "take the test"!

I can chant too, "TAKE THE DEPO, FLOYD!"

i think this is a case of putting your money where your mouth is!! if Mayweather is sure of his accusation, then there is no fear of him facing the lawsuit.

btw, he had been boasting that he could beat MP anytime, then why not fight him without the testing?

This is the #1 most-commented on article on Opposing View -- all in favor of Pacman -- but not one person can answer my two simple questions:

1. Tell me EXACTLY what Mayweather said worthy of a lawsuit?
2. Explain WHY Pacman was scared to test before and after the fight?

Is it because no one knows the answer? Or just embarrassing for PacMan fans because after further review, it's apparent Pacman does NOT want to fight Mayweather?

Another thing: the writer's getting hammered by every single comment, but not one comment is relevant to the only facts that matter, which are the answers to questions 1 and 2 above.

Someone please step up to the plate and back up your statements. Please.

lol, its because your question is the stupidest question around next to this article doberman wrote! lol

1. who told you pac is afraid of blood test?
2. do you have facts pac said he is afraid of after the fight blood test?

dumb idiot! pac never said he is afraid.. the mayweathers categorized along with dela hoya camp that pacquiao is technically afraid of needles for not accepting their one specific demand. pac then wants the right after the fight but floyd keep insisting on this all the way to fight night blood test only. thats the answer to your dumb idiotic question! lol

now please tell me this. recently floyd said he will fight pac after ortiz but then he is fishing khan his next? as i have read just recently pac already agreed on all the way blood testing. where is floyd now? still fishing khan his next?

all floyd fans are absolutely dumb idiots me think! lol

I have great respect for Pac. He's an incredible person, inside and out. Mayweather, not so much.

What Pac has done for his country is incredible. What he's done for boxing is amazing. Boxing needs Pac. But boxing also needs Mayweather. And they need to get it on!

I'm pissed at Pac for not agreeing to original fight terms. As a result, we've had to put up with sub-par fights for way to long!

As dumb and idiotic as you think these questions are, they're actually tough, hard-hitting questions that no one -- including you -- can answer.

If you cannot agree to be tested leading up to fight night, what are you hiding? What are you afraid of? What's the real issue here? These are all the same question..

Try and wrap your tiny brain around this simple question and give me an answer. Not some sorry-ass name-calling attempt to make yourself look good, because in reality, you sound like a 15 yr-old punk that's all talk. (Pac would be embarrassed by your verbal sparring.)

I genuinely want to know WHY Pac will not agree to the testing leading up to the fight.

If you cannot answer that simple question, please, do yourself a favor and take a look at the facts and come to the logical conclusion and admit Pac did't -- and still doesn't -- want any part of Mayweather, unless of course, he doesn't have to test leading up to the fight.

Just admit it.

Or, here's another idea: answer the f-ing question.
