As president, Mr. Obama has been singularly gifted at giving great speeches--and singularly effective at allowing Republicans to define the public discussion.
Mr. Obama tried to do for Ms. Coakley--however abysmal her campaign--exactly what he has done for health care reform: Allowed the opposition to drive the argument and then believe he could ride in on a charger at the eleventh hour, deliver a speech and save the day. It's just not working and it's damaging him and the Democratic party, and spoiling the chance for real health care and banking reform.

I used to be an activist Republican who was at one time, President Ford's campaign chairman at the University of Okla in 1976. Those were wonderful times for those of us who were progressive Republicans and in control of the party. I finally, in 2004, had had enough of what the Republican Party had become, a voted for John Kerry and other Democrats for the first time! The Republican Party was taken over by a bunch of far-right extremists over the last 25 years and have never tried to moderate their image in order to attract independent voters as well as reaching out to the moderate wing of the GOP. The result is the election of Obama and sensible, pragmatic democrats, in control of the Congress! At one time, we were those types of Democrats! The far-right Republicans in congress are now in total control of the GOP. The moderates are so few in numbers now that they have no voice left. What is left of the Republican coalition? White males in certain southern and rocky mountain and plains states, evangelical zealots, and the IRA!
The Republicans now have no representation in the House from New England and only 3 are from NY! I live in Philadelphia and the Republicans have lost much of their influence and registration numbers in the suburbs especially! No wonder Arlen Spector had to leave the GOP! The Republicans today think the only answer to any economic problem is to cut taxes without offering a way to pay for them-look at the mess Obama inherited from the worst President we ever had-BUSH!

A Party will regain governing power by realizing that power is not a finite commodity. Government currently has huge bureaucratic power and is exercising almost no responsibility to resolve fundamental issues of human life, society, and governance. A Party does not need to be in the political 'driver's seat' to amass the capacity to address fundamental issues. It can even build influence by enabling the other party to effectively govern. Both parties need to stand for the people, justice and humanity -- instead of their own power.
So this opposing viewpoint question is seriously miscast in my thinking. It is also somewhat nonsensical in the choice of opposing viewpoints. They are more like, "Two random views."
Republicans will die unless they become a larger tent. They will fail to become a larger tent by trying to be a larger tent. It is like the little white Baptist church in my black neighborhood that wants black people to join and can't figure out it might require some change on their own part. They don't need to give up any fundamental beliefs (except the racism thing) but rather need to love their neighbors so they might understand their neighbors, be changed by their neighbors, and in so doing come to an understanding of how their faith speaks to the hopes and needs of their neighbors and themselves.
Republicans need to stop trying to include or exclude pro-choice , log-cabin, black, hispanic, liberal, etc. They need to start loving folks outside the tent and being changed by those relationships; and in so doing understanding how fundamental Republican principles can be brought to bear on the legitimate hopes and issues of these groups.
We are in a very divisive set of fights around homosexuality and abortion. The power is not in lining up on one side of the debate. It is about the capacity to embrace the legitimate interests which seem to compete and bring transcendent values to bear. A party that could speak to the legitimate concerns of the Log Cabin Republicans and to the Family Research Council would be a party that could govern and should govern. If either party cannot figure out how to walk this out within their own party, then why should we trust they could do any better with the country.
We do not presently have two strong parties, or one strong party. We have two weak parties. We have one party in power who has done better at cobbling together competing self-interests -- uniting under a 'HOPE' they can govern.
Why not move beyond hope and actually do it within a party. It does not need a change in tactics or strategy but in transformation.

The Republican platform is interesting, in it's purest form. It's a great debating position, that could lead to a constantly changing and evolving country. Where the problem came in was Reagan's election , getting Jesus and the Christian Right involved. Let Obama create his stimulus packages, soon people will see that this is only hurting us. Get back down into "Republican Style" economics, free markets, bring back government control over businesses (aka the health care industry, banking industry, etc.), and bring back economic policies mirroring that of supply side. It wouldn't hurt to have a religious individual, but by all means NOT a fundamentalist, or "die-hard". They only push away moderates. Get rid of the "Sarah Palin" style (aiming for an already captured conservative vote), and bring someone more moderate (NOT liberal), with the exception of economic standing.

They also need to work on their image and point out how Republican solutions are often better fot he poor and minorities in the long run, since they generally focus on teaching them how to fish rather than just giving them a handout. Unfortunately, McCain had been selected before the economic crisis. If Romney had been the Republican nominee, especially with a good blue-collar running mate, (Palin actually would have been a great pick for him) I don't think Obama would have stood a chance.
