Georgia State Headed to Sun Belt

It was just two months ago that we wrote about Georgia State testing the waters for a move up to the FBS. Now it is being reported that Georgia State will have a news conference on Monday at 2 pm at the Georgia Dome to accept an invitation to the Sun Belt Conference for all sports. Georgia State will make the jump in 2013 but will not become a full member of the Sun Belt until the 2014 season.

Georgia State has only been playing football for two seasons as Head Coach Bill Curry has led them to a 9-13 record over the two years with their highest profile game being a beatdown at the hands of Alabama in their first year. This season, the Panthers will face off with another SEC foe as they travel to Tennessee on September 8th to face off with the Vols.

This is great news for Georgia State but I would caution fans to temper their expectations. Not only is Georgia State a brand new program but they also will be making a pretty big step up in competition. The addition of scholarships will obviously help and the Panthers have very talented recruiting base to pull from but it will be an uphill battle for the Panthers on the field.
