Floyd Mayweather Doesn’t Think Manny Pacquiao Fight Will Happen?

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., have always had a very complex relationship. The pair has gone through stretches where they appear like the most formidable of duos, only to fall back into the same old pattern of mudslinging and badmouthing one another. Their dynamic transcends the typical ebbs and flows you see with fathers and sons and, because of this, anything one says about the other should usually be taken with a grain of salt.

Recently, Mayweather Sr. spoke to Chris Robinson of Boxing Scene, and the conversation was -- as you would probably expect -- very interesting. Although they started out talking Amir Khan versus Lamont Peterson, talk quickly turned to the most prevalent topic in all of boxing – a potential showdown between Manny Pacquiao and Mayweather Jr.

Robinson pressed Mayweather Sr. on a number of issues related to his son, but it was the veteran trainer’s opinion of whether or not a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Jr. megafight would ever transpire that probably struck a chord with most boxing aficionados.

“I think the fight is never going to happen. I see them trying to get it together now. I guess they want to get it together now because Manny Pacquiao just showed his a**,” Mayweather Sr. said. “Ain’t no way in hell he whoop Lil’ Floyd. No way on whatever part of earth, Mars, Venus, whatever, ain’t no way that he whoop Floyd. No way.”

For what it’s worth, noting that that Mayweather Sr. and Mayweather Jr. don’t have much to say to one another these days would probably be an understatement.

“We aint got no conversation. Don’t get me wrong, my son, it’s no different than anybody else. He did a tremendous job under my tutelage. He’s been with Roger for five years but I already taught him how to fight. All Roger is is a maintenance man. Look here man, he still my son. I still love him. But the way he carries on, hey man, he has no respect for me and let it be that way.”

As such, Mayweather Sr. probably doesn’t have much insight into what’s going on behind closed door negotiations between Pacquiao and Mayweather Jr.’s representatives.

Still, regardless of the source, any time you hear that Pacquiao and Mayweather Jr. aren’t close to an agreement you can’t help but get down. The fight feels so close at this point, so within reach – another failure would be an undeniable blow to the entire sport.

Here’s to hoping Mayweather Sr. has no idea what he’s talking about.
