Does Pornography Harm America?

The Internet explosion has brought the previously underground world of pornography directly to the homes and desktops of thousands of Americans. In fact, porn now grosses an estimated $15 billion annually in the U.S. alone. While some see pornography's popularity as a sign of America's profound moral decay, others believe pornography is harmless -- and even beneficial or educational. Is pornography dirty entertainment or good clean fun?

First of all I would like to thank to the American Constitution which has a clear defination of the true liberalism, secondly to the models & actressess who have shown the real guts and courage to show and promote & arousenment of the real hidden desire of both the women & men. It is with the efforts of them that today even the age old civilisation is trying to modernise the status & condition of women, It is after the invention of pon that women have been understood differently by men, it is after this that women desires has been taken into consideration. thank you pornstars you ahve shown the guts which no other women of the world dares to. I love watching pornographies and is a die hard fan of it. you continue your contribution and take the industry to its desired goal. Moreover, right to freedom, choice, expression is our fundamental rights and porn does not depict any kind of violation, so it should be made more liberalised.
thank you
Md.Jahangir(true fan of pornography)

No!..it doesn't..i mean i dont see pornography as a catalyst for rape and other sex related crimes, for a country with such good sex education (compared to african countries) theres nothing much to worry about the youngsters.
When it comes to pornographic actors i have no ill feelings towards them..infact i'm indifferent about the all thing, it's closely related to prostitution and i'm indifferent about that too, both professions precede me and i don't judge what others invent..if you see it as depraved or humiliating then you should know that most people don't do it because they like it but because to them it is the only way to earn an income..if you need to complain then shout at the goverment to create 'moral' job opportunities and not at the people who are trying to make a living.

Years from now, when those people involved in porn now are looking over their lives to find meaning, they will regret the harm they did to themselves and others. There are a few unrepentent losers who will always justify themselves, but deep down, we all know we would rather have a legacy of elevating mankind, rather than lowering it to the lowest form of existence.

There's really nothing more disgusting than an old whore. Except for maybe an old whoremonger, who has wasted God's gift of life by fulfilling all his fleshly urges, instead of making an honorable reputation, and a good example for the next generation.

How does one get to be a certified expert in pornography ?

Sex is a natural human desire, and for men especially sexual visualization is a major stimulation. On one hand I believe that if you remove the outlet you create sexual frustration..which can be bad. I know that rape supposedly isn't about sex , but I'm not so sure that a sexually frustrated man wouldn't be looking for the gratification somewhere if he can't get it from a willing partner and he has no visual stimulation to look at.

Then there's the issue of children coming into contact with it. Man, this is a tough question, lol. The question of how it effects moral degredation in society . I'm sure it helps drive it negative.

Finally, I saw someone ask if it were our own daughter in the porn film would we still feel the same way? That's a hypothetical that's nearly impossible to answer. Of course I woudn't want my daughter to be involved in it, but that's not really the question is it? That's not an impact on society, that's a personal impact.

Porn is just a selfish endeavor. There's nothing more than that.

OH BUT IT HELPS ME FIGURE OUT MORE SEXUAL POSITIONS I'D LOVE TO TRY..uh..lame. How is that not selfish?

But I am doing it for my partner.

But you're looking at other people nude and having sex ..how is that not selfish?

uh..shut up.

/end.

People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid. - Soren Aabye Kierkegaard (1813-1855)

This is not my area of expertise (as if I had any, lol). I dont' really think about the porn industry and it's effect on society . I'm more of a political guy. But I think I see more negative effects than positive.

The craziest thing about porn that i have ever learned is that women watch it more then men!

(Food for Thought)- Minimum viewing age for porn 18-21.
Minimum age for consent, 16 in some states..

Porn is great. Everyone who doesn't think so just hasn't found the porn for them.

Saying that pornography is harmful to American society seems like another case of the medium itself being blamed for the shortcomings of human beings. Sick individuals don't need pornography in order to bring harm on another human being. That's like saying all muggers need a weapon in order to snatch the purse of an unarmed victim. The phallic symbol, the inanimate object, does not commit the crime . The offender does by their own planning and pretense. It's their conscious or sickly decision to carry deviant acts out upon a non-consenting victim.

Saying that porn destroys marriages is pretty immature. Porn and sex toys are often suggested by medical experts as a way to revitalize relationships. And it's available in different degrees, from softcore to other extreme fetishes. I'm sure that at least one of the people commenting here has the thought "What type of depraved individual wants to see midget porn?" or "Why do we need midget porn?" Have you ever considered that little people are still people too? How often does their size, or lack thereof, affect them in a social way? Should they not be able to "get their rocks off," especially after the frustration and defeat of being ridiculed by general society?

And what about those women who are degraded? Perhaps you're jealous of the money they get paid for so little actual work. Perhaps you're jealous of how comfortable they are with their bodies. It's not like they don't choose the lifestyle; more people attempt to get into the industry than you think. If someone makes the conscious decision to get into pornography as an actor or actress then it is their decision. If you don't like watching pornography then you may elect not to. It's no different from choosing to not watch the NFL because you don't like football. Yes. It's NO different.

Both pornography and sports exist because there's a market for them as entertainment . While porn is more varied, they're both cash crops. It's the same principle. Porn stars are just as much a commodity as an athlete who is good at a given sport. The only difference is porn doesn't get thrown on your television set Monday nights.

It's not as though pornography surrounds you. There's still rules and ethics in place, thanks to the prude and self-righteous, which keep it from bombarding you. We have censorship from monitoring software, adult video and book stores mostly have nondescript signs, and the FCC keeps the content from showing up in-between your favorite primetime television shows.

There's absolutely no scientific social studies to prove that porn degrades women anymore than it degrades the men (and women) who pay an exorbitant amount of money to acquire it. And what's with the lies that porn does NOT get regulated? Each actor and actress must complete a 2257 form which guarantees that they are of legal age to participate in such films. If they don't have this paperwork then it is just as illegal as carrying a firearm without a license or driving a car without a license. It is still a breach of the law ..

Human trafficking and pornographic media are not the same thing and don't belong within the same discussion. Forced human trafficking should not be mixed with the idea that some - but not all - women (and men) choose to get into the profession of pornography as victims of circumstance. However, the majority do it because they actually enjoy catering to fantasies and getting paid well to do it. You want to stop human trafficking? End poverty and you'll solve far more problems than you would by eliminating porn.

Stop blaming fantasy for reality's problems. Grow. Up.

"If I had the choice between letting my child watch a Porno or a Cops and Robbers movie, I'd choose the Porno. Nobody ever died in a Porno."
- Lenny Bruce.

The question of whether porn is degrading to women hinges on how we think of women that dance in strip clubs or pose nude on the internet or do porn films. What if that was our sister or daughter? Do we have the same opinion of these women that we do of women that work for example in an office?

Oh, and I wouldn't be using Lenny Bruce as a source. I read a book about him and he had problems.

It's really impossible for someone who hasn't worked in the sex trade to answer questions like "Is it degrading" with any real sense of accuracy. We don't know how they feel. Probably, there's a mixture of people who are happy about it, like Ms. Hartley up there, and people who are not happy about it.

The "It's somebody's daughter" or "somebody's sister" always struck me as a somewhat sexist sentiment. I mean, that's sort of giving them value--because they're related to a man. I think "that's somebody like you or me" would be a more accurate remark

i can't speak for the women. But for me the point is that society says we have freedom of expression. So it's OK for women to work as adult performers. But society doesn't treat them that way. It is degrading because the same people that defend the right to watch adult expression look down on the performers.

..that's a problem for society . If some of the people within society can't deal with the idea that someone is gratified by their occupation, no matter how strange or appalling it might be to the offended, then maybe they should confront why they feel that way. Not force someone to doubt themselves because you're unhappy with the decision.

I like the comment I read somewhere down below regarding bad decisions and regret. I think that hit the nail on the head. Some women regret the decision to start in the career of porn. But a lot of people regret their careers. Isolating it to porn as if that's the only one that isn't a non-issue is, again, immature. You can regret any decision you've made no matter how it turns out. Regretting a nude photo shoot is hardly as bad as regretting driving drunk and injuring or killing somebody. The only thing you might hurt as a porn actor or actress is the way you're perceived by those who view it as a social stigmata.

That's society's problem.

I think pornography is just great, when it's done right, and people who do that are just like any other performer. I don't look down on them, and neither should anyone else, if they're smart.

It's not the Freedom of Expression aspect of it that I find important. Sex is a part of the human experience. It's actually a really, really big part. It's up there with food . We can berate McDonalds and praise Wolfgang Puck, but no one really argues that restaraunts are a good idea..

But that's not the attitude you get from society and it's not the attitude you get from the media and "done right" is a pretty big if to get past.

Attitudes from society and from the media are completely different. Local media caters to demographics while national and syndicated media is going to be biased to some degree. While the type of community (society) you live in determines much of the local media, you most likely won't agree with MSNBC if you're Conservative and you won't agree with FOX is you're Liberal. What I'm saying is that society is pretty varied.

I think society's opinion is varied a lot more than you think. Just like quantummechanik said, "Is the viewpoint of some a reason enough to stop something?"

Everyone should be entitled to their own view - their own choices. Likewise, everyone should be entitled to do what they will with their lives. You don't have to like it. You don't even need to respect it. But you shouldn't say that it be forbidden because a number of people are too immature to deal with its existence. Also think about the jobs it creates and the market that exists for it in the first place. If there wasn't a demand it would not be so expensive or varied. Actresses and actors wouldn't be living in mansions equivalent to what your mainstream celebrities get.

I object to "porn done right" because what's right for you might not be what's right for me. "Done right" is truly subjective.

Generally, no. I haven't seen any tolerance for adult performers in the society or in the media . And as for conservatives we have seen several examples of hypocrisy from the family values crowd.

a reason enough to stop something? Because some people look down on a particular act, is that a reason to stop the act?

I agree, there are many, many jerks. However, there aren't really any issues where there isn't a high jerk factor.

Most people like to look down on others. The fact is that while society defends the free expression of adult performers and many people like to look at porn, most people look down on the performers and wouldn't have them in their homes. Is that a reason to stop porn? No. That's an entirely different question.

always been a sort of traditional double standard that I think links into sexism in America. I agree, these people are jackasses. So why do you think porn should be stopped?

Jesus taught that people need to have self respect. For how can you understand how to treat others as you would treat yourself if you don't first have self respect. Thinking of anybody as jackasses is a sin. The question is, why are they jackasses? A jackass is someone who does something stupid or dangerous. Harmful.

porn itself does no harm to America's moral fiber, or lack there of, even without porn those addicted would just find something else to get off on, something perhaps more dangerous or degrading.

Whats left of America's moral fiber.I would say very little. As for porn it will alway be here on earth. But one day I will leave this world and meet my maker.

First of all, the definition of pornography has been less than precise. Films like Midnight Cowboy have been deemed pornographic. Art that is pornographic in nature is valuable--or at least it can be, like all other art--and a permissive America is one where art flourishes.

Secondly, it's an industry. Like all other industries, it has it's good corporations and bad corporations, but it sends income into the US from foreign markets. So more money for us. Score.

Agreed, pornography can mean almost anything considered sexy. So lets limit it to a more legal definition. Is hardcore pornography harmful? The answer is yes, if for no other reason then that it is not properly regulated.

So, let's say hardcore pornography isn't stuff like Midnight Cowboy. The idea of yours leads to an interesting concept--Is anything unregulated dangerous?

Would you agree or disagree that pornography as a CONCEPT isn't harmful, or just in it's execution currently?

Tobacco. Can some violent hardcore pornography be harmful, yes. As a concept is most hardcore pornography harmful, generally no. I have two concerns. The first is that the production of hardcore pornography should be regulated to protect the performers. Second that some means needs to be found to better block hardcore sites on the internet . Hardcore pornography on the internet are legal and people should be able to watch it if they want. But I supported the xxx TLD so that those that didn't want it or wanted to protect their children could easily block it from their computer.

it be okay by you to say that, as a sumarry of your position (I think, anyways) that you're not opposed to the concept of pornography , just how it's currently made. I can't imagine anyone who owuld be against further protection for the performers.

I am not legally opposed to the concept of pornography , although I don't watch hardcore pornography myself. Regulating protection for the performers may be harder then you think. Look at the regulations for legal prostitution in Nevada. I would think at the very least: Strict age verification for performers. Union membership, and I don't mean a company union, for all performers and crew. And most important, safe sex in ALL scenes. With computer graphics becoming more realistic I think in the end hardcore porn will go all virtual where there is no question of its legality.

People should also have a choice of blocking it or not from their computer, so I would still like to see an adult TLD or some other way to make it easy for a person to block it from his computer.

morally or philosophically opposed to the concept of pornography ?

The legal discussion, I agree, sort of ends with the first amendment invocation. So I find it a bit boring.

Pornography as expressions of sex can be positive or negative. If pornography glorifies rape or violence against women then I am morally against it. When it comes to the performers in porn videos or on the internet , the question is what if that was your sister, or your daughter, would you feel the same way. Would it still be alright?

You know mike the youth of america is not like the youth when we were young. Its some how good to be a whore now.So the sister thing would be ok with them. Some of the youth would do there own sisters.I seen this with all class of people.

It has been said that every generation sees their predecessors as angels, and their successors as donkeys. There is a certain level of truth to that.. as we grow up we are confined by our childhood, it is only once we become older that we start to realize that things are not all bright and shiny. As such the tendency is there to perceive things as being better in the past then they are now.

That would be rather flawed logic.

Memories are selective. Some thing were better, some were not and some things are about the same. But when it comes to pornography things have gotten worse.

I would say with pornography things have gotten out of hand. The youth of today everthing goes.It was never a good thing to be a whore when I was young.O yes I did look for them and had lots of good times with them. But being a whore was not something to be proud of.

There have always been a few people with little morality. My point was to the larger group in the media and society that see nothing wrong with looking at nude photos on the internet or dancers at strip clubs but scandalize these women at the same time. If it is wrong for women to pose for these photos or dance in these clubs, it is just as wrong for us to look at them.

yes your right

Harm America? What does that mean? Why would it harm any one country more than another country? Is it bad for our economy or national defense?

I'll admit it and be up front about it. I'm a pervert. Like many people, I look at porn from time to time. I've looked at porn and dirty magazines since I was little. It's sleazy, it's a cheap thrill, it's a forbidden thing-many guys like it. But I can say that I am not addicted to it. To be honest, it actually gets boring after a while unlike erotic movies with an actual story to it and not just all sex for no reason. Our culture seems to be extremely squeamish when it comes anything about sex and even nudity. You should see Europe. I think the more open people are about accepting sex as a natural thing than a narrowminded view of being an evil lust, the better off people are when it comes to sex and relationships.

And just because I look at porn doesn't make me objectify women, use women, or become an abuser to women. There's a difference between your dark forbidden desires where you can fantasize about doing whatever you want without anyone getting hurt, and real life. I guess some people can't distinguish this and get so into porn that it's the only means of intimacy (that is, sex without love) they have or they do become an abuser. This assumption doesn't apply to everyone who's exposed to porn.

I also don't think porn objectifies women because after all, those women are willingly taking part in it. And what about the men in it?

Nevertheless, the real ugly side of the sex industry are human trafficking and forced prostitution.

You pin - pointed the exact problem with porn - it's boring. This is why the industry keeps pushing it and doing even more degrading things. Some guys like you get bored and walk away but others get sucked in like a vaccuum. Before you know it - even the rape porn is boring and that's when their obsessions take a drastic turn for the worst and I think you can tell where that is.

Sex plays a big part in the sociology of a person. It effects mood and how we act and thing, and it is a huge object of motivation and driving of ambition. Romace, spiriual copulation, it's related. The intimite, the childhood apserations and models. These are all related. To simply one aspect or another is not difficult but to do so on the large and complete scale.

To be sexually satiated, spiritually, romantically, and socially. These are goals i think can breed world peace. There's enough studies to understand the effects of insaitable sexual desire. It changes the fabric of reality. what is home, what is friendship, what to do on sunday.

It was also mentioned that kids are not interested in sex. That's not correct. Kids are very sexually minded. I was. I see other kids with it in mind. I think pornography hyper extends one's childhood sexual interest. The depth and ends of sexual satiation have profound effect on individuals and the society they partake in. To be sexually prudent in a sexually liberated society is more difficult. and to have stable domestic relations between people in a flashy over the top sexually liberated society. well, it's a compromised position. If everyone was a super swinger. maybe its not a issue. that's how a lot see the problem and solution. swing em all. that's a niave perspective. Sex and humanity, there's a lot of prudence involved. It's the take take take males whom get the most attention from the females. The values people how, as decent, and valueble, sacred and lovely. outside of the intimate relations, they're rooted in a large part by they mystery dance. The effects are often deeper than on can see off hand. again, the arts and acceivements were fueled in large by romance. there's not much room for romance in the land of swingers. i can just imagine such a society. lunch work time,, the secretary takes on half the crew. then it's everyone back to work.

take the work crew scenario. ed biggles doesn't take the secretary because he couldn't push in front of the others, because it was crass and he's strong and brutish. but he designed the product that put the company on top n got everyone nice pay increase. Usually these contributions go unnoticed. I see it all the time. The number of my single male friends, all decent people. always single. good looking people. it is so not the issue. but then those people, who are always stepping on people, backstabbing them, bad mouthing people, and being obnoxious shit, even ugly people. Lumpy and crater faced jack asses. never single. That's women, that's society . They're earth based. It's the selfish nature that is most attractive to most women. brign that into the equation. You will see an increase of murder , child moelestation and an entire degregation of humanity, the reason why is, the only rewards in life will be toward the most selfish of people.

see i think the issue is understood to some degree and there's the side whom say, well, we'll just have sexual awareness hour at work and we'll hire someone to get ed off and satiate him. it's just not the same. when romance dies in the world on a large scale. so too does all the noble things of humanity. to be a bunch of rats is to be a bunch of rats, it's certainly not progress. i think my point was made, however poorly. I seen nobility and dignity being assaulted by the so many outlets. where do you think thise leads? Is it indecent to keep people in cages? is it indecent starve maim and kill those whom we dislike? it is. but not in soon to be future. the idea of decency would be niave. Do you see how the 'decency' of ed was considered weak and niave. that was my point. i surround my self with whom i consider honest and good people. charismatic,, and intelligent. How absolutely single they are. it's shocking. the douche bags i know never single. I hate those people. It's funny how mysterious it is to people. It's really simple. confidence? no, it's the ability to bullshit. wisdom and exprience reveals itself and the winners imerge at the end,(hopfeuflly, i don't really think so though) it's partyly that way, but remove it entirely. i see the whole society submerging themselves in BS.

the idea of decency IS considered niave.

You see it on the street, and more predominantly on the internet . The children are really tuned in. They see decency as a grave affliction, yet it's upon decency that society has been built on it. They shall not survive.

The real problem with pornography is that it teaches people that fornication is OK. Would our society have become so blase' about single mothers if people had not been weaned away from the notion that non-marital sex is sinful?
