Denver Broncos Trade Tim Tebow to New York Jets; Bad Move?

Well, that was quick.

According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, the Denver Broncos have agreed to trade pop culture icon Tim Tebow to the New York Jets for a fourth-round draft pick (Update: and a sixth). The Jets end up with Tebow and the Broncos' seventh rounder. Depending on who you ask, Rex Ryan and Co. either just stole one of the most intriguing young quarterbacks in NFL history or they just signed Mark Sanchez’s death warrant.

Although you don’t want to dismiss any transaction as stupid before you hear the reasoning behind it, you can’t help but be puzzled at the Jets’ calculation here. Everything we said yesterday when this rumor first sprung up still applies.

Via yesterday’s quick analysis:

“Tebow could never be a backup. His time with Denver -- when the fans essentially forced management to swap him in for a struggling Kyle Orton -- proved this much. Tebow would need to be a starter anywhere he went. And in that spirit, nobody, including the powers that be in New York, could possibly consider Tebow a substantial upgrade at the starting spot over Mark Sanchez. Especially not when you’ve just extended Sanchez in the aftermath of getting spurned by Peyton Manning.

“The other thing that throws a potential Tebow-Jets marriage into question is that team’s toxic-ish locker room. The personalities on the roster require an adult. A proven, Manning-esque figure who would command everyone’s respect. Much in the same way that Jets players obviously don’t have too much respect for Sanchez, they would similarly disregard Tebow as all hype.”

Multiple sources have noted that part of the logic behind pulling the trigger on this move was the image makeover that Tebow could provide for the Jets. If none of the players on the roster respect him enough to listen to him, though, how could he improve their image?

Mind you, prior to this deal getting made, Antonio Cromartie posted this on Twitter:

“Y bring Tebow in when we need to bring in more Weapons for @Mark_Sanchez let's build the team around him. We already signed to 3 year ext.”

This move just reeks of confused desperation, any which way you look at it.

Stay tuned, things are about to get even more interesting in New York.

Update 2: Maybe not.
