The Duke Blue Devils got some good recruiting news recently, when Matt Jones made his commitment to Mike Krzyzewski’s program known this past week.
On the heels of their mildly embarrassing Maui hangover-induced blowout loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Blue Devils can take solace in the fact that they just picked up one of the more highly touted youngsters in the land.
Jones, a 6-3 shooting guard from DeSoto High, committed to Duke late Monday despite saying in the past that he wouldn’t commit this soon in the process. As the No. 21 ranked junior prospect in the country (according to ESPN), he commanded a lot of attention from teams look for a lights-shooter. Between his stroke and timing, Jones is considered a particularly superb at what he does, and someone that should fit perfectly in the gameplan that provided a path to stardom for the likes of J.J. Redick and Jon Scheyer.
“He's got a very distinguished stroke. He's an excellent 3-point shooter, one of the better 3-point shooters in the country regardless of class,” wrote ESPN analysis, Dave Telep
And for his part, Jones has heard the comparisons.
"They tried to compare me a little to J.J. Redick in that we both can shoot and they'd get me open like they did him," Jones said.
"It's the way they play and Coach K. Everybody respects him and what they stand for with academics on and off the court. They can get me to the next level as a person and a man and as a player to continue to improve my game."
Jones goes down as the first Duke commitment from the class of 2013.
