Are Generic Drugs as Effective as Name Brands?

Sick and tired of high drug costs? You're not alone. Americans spend more than 150 billion dollars per year on pharmaceuticals, and with costs rising all the time, many are looking to generic alternatives. These products promise the same benefits as their name-brand equivalents, but at a fraction of the cost. When considering something as important as your personal health, do generic drugs measure up?

Thanks for this post! It's like buying a cheap car over an expensive car. What would you choose? It isn't the most rewarding thing to keep a vehicle in good nick. It can be expensive and it is almost better to ditch the dirty old thing and get a new one. A recent survey found that the average duration of automobile ownership is, in fact, growing. If you need extra cash to repair your car could take a cash advance.

Yes, generic drugs are as effective as branded ones, though certain medications have immediate effect. When someone gets sick, I'd have to apply for a Payday Loan all the time. So a cheaper yet as effective drug would really help cut down the cost.

i feel they are effective
health

generic drugs are cheaper and are very effective. i spent lot of money for my hair transplantation and after that i was using generic drugs to prevent hair loss and it was very cheap and affordable

It's a touchy topic and there are no straightforward answers. On the one side, patents and profit making must be allowed for medical research to continue and advancements made. But, on the other hand how many lives are lost to untreated or partial treatments because someone couldn't afford the exorbitant prices tacked onto medications. Ethics do come into play here.

I side with the generics at the end of the day. The large pharmaceuticals have a right to earn profit, but they have overstepped decency and price their meds at near criminal levels. The patent periods should be shortened, and a price ceiling should be set. We're not talking about an HD TV; we're talking about life and death here. Last time I checked, Phizer and others are still earning record profits while millions of Americans are struggling to keep a roof over their heads, never mind trying to keep their health intact. A little plug here; I normally purchase my meds from westcoastdrugs.net. They provide really good service, and never once have I had any problems with overcharging or meds not coming in as promised. And yes, I save quite a bit of money going this route.

Some generic drugs have an equivalent name brands. They just differ in name but they have the same composition. The world’s best-selling drug, Pfizer’s Lipitor, is officially “off-patent” as of Nov. 30, according to Reuters, meaning generic versions of the drug can be made and sold by generic drug firms. Lipitor has been responsible for about $13 billion in sales per year, which according to the CIA World FactBook is more than the Gross Domestic Product of Iceland. Generic drug companies are expected to start shipping their versions of the drug, which goes by the chemical name atorvastatin. Patients taking the drug can expect to save a lot of money as it and other brand-name drugs go generic. They may want to consider getting payday loans to get the medicine. In order to market drugs, U.S. generic manufacturers must have a permit and approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicating that the active ingredient is approximately the same as that of the brand name. The determination of drug approval is made according to whether it is pharmaceutically equivalent, for more information visit this site (http://www.moonpharmacy.com/) bio-available, and bioequivalent.

Whatever the topic is generic drugs are always the cheap drugs. And we even get discount on the medication so it is better for me with the generic drug.

Are generics as good as brands? This debate has gone on for years. Will there be a definite answer? The fact is that many generic antiarrhythmic drugs, hormones, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, and liquid formulations are just not as effective as brand name versions.

The following article explains the existing controversy in detail:

http://www.originaldrugs.com/blog/general/brand-vs-generic-drugs/

Actually, generic drugs are only cheaper because the manufacturers have not had the expenses of developing and marketing a new drug. When a company brings a new drug onto the market, the firm has already spent substantial money on research, development, marketing and promotion of the drug. A patent is granted that gives the company that developed the drug an exclusive right to sell the drug as long as the patent is in effect.

The reality is that the efficacy of generic drugs are same as of branded drugs. The generic drugs manufactured under high quality guidelines in which their counter parts are made. At http://www.emedoutlet.com i found a good article "Branded Drugs Vs generics"

I highly recommend Danner boots. They have two lines, one made in Portland, the other made somewhere in Asia, possibly China. I have two pair of their American-made Acadia boots, one purchased in person at their outlet store in Portland for $50, and the other

ordered from the Danner website.

Well, sometimes it depends on the people taking it and how their body react to the drug that was given to them. But so far, I haven't heard any complaints with regards in taking generic drugs.Oh, anyway, I heard that an increasing list of brand-name drugs will become more affordable as the patents for the drugs lapse. Some of the best-selling medications on the market are included, so Big Pharma’s loss will be the public’s gain. A payday loan will not be needed for a medication anymore.

i personally don't see a difference in the name brand but some doctors say that there is a significant difference in the effects when it comes down to it. I would only encourage a paitent to use the name brand if i have seen a significant difference in my clientele.

They work in many cases, but in some cases they don't. For example, people with epilepsy often cannot tolerate the generics due to the leaps between proper concentrations in the medications. For a person with epilepsy is must be very precise and similar from dose to dose, or they will have a seizure. Some the generics varying in concentration by 30% from dose to dose and that can be deadly for an epileptic.

The reality is, they work for some things and don't work for other things. It's not a one-size fits all question.

I have been taking generic drugs for a long time and this has been effective to me for me. I feel generic are effective and also best priced You can get treated at low price and effective. I even don't have health insurance . Generics have been best friend of mine. I get best priced generics from a online pharmacy ( http://www.internationaldrugmart.com /) which has decade old experience in pharmaceuticals

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28020739 /

I don't even understand how this is something to debate. The very definition of generic drug means it's the same drug.

From dictionary.com:
"generic: any product, as a type of food, drug, or cosmetic commonly marketed under a brand name, that is sold in a package without a brand. "

I had never heard of this topic as vaguely controversial before. The first point under the "yes" side states exactly what you say here, and as soon as I saw that on the main page I just thought, "Of course. Why are we even talking about this?" All the objections and complaints about generics sound like urban legends -- like, "I know someone whose cousin had a friend who was sick but generics didn't help." This is silly.

Seems to me the issue isn't are all generics exactly the same, which begs the question why are they cheaper than, is it just pattons of brand products or slight differences in fillers and synthetics?

But that said, even if exactly the same, isnt it the individuals bodies and makeup that is never exactly the same, or react the same? Even in studies this is relevant and addressed. So this forum doesnt seem like a criticizm of Pharmacies or government necessarily, but a knowledge of individuals actual experience and reactions, and attempts to seek knowledge. I thought that was all what education , common sense and debate was about. There is no "absolutely not a debate" about it, is condescending and stupid. The only stupid people I know are those who don't ask questions and seek out information in their own medical care and knowledge. If it works for you fine, but judge not until you have walked in someone elses shoes. Just a suggestion.

I take anti-depressant and blood pressure medicine. I was being forced to use name-brand for awhile, as my pharmacy didn't offer it, when I realized this I switched pharmacies.

I save a ton of money, and they work just as well. No wonder your big pharmaceutical companies are so rich..overcharging for their products. Generic medications have the exact same active ingredients, therefore they work the same. Bottom line, end of story.

As an Australian I have the advantage of a Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. Patients are offered the choice between brand name drugs and generic drugs. There is no problem with generic drugs. They save both the consumer and the Government money.

Finally, if you are reading this comment in the United States, just remember that Australians have a longer average life expectancy than you do, so it can't be doing us too much harm!

Generic drugs work for me.They save me money .That money helps out my family.

Over the course of my lifetime, I've taken a fair amount of prescription drugs for different health issues. I agree they work just as well the vast majority of the time, with minor exceptions. I CAN tell you that during those times when I had no health insurance, GENERIC DRUGS WERE A LIFESAVER! I'll give you some examples of the efficacy of RX drugs I've taken. My review is subjective, and doesn't account for things like degradation due to improper storage, etc. (excuse the format, they odn't allow text separation)

Prilosec v. Omeprazole = Brand name Prilosec wins this hands down. I had to take double the generic for the same results. Percocet v. Oxycodone = same relief. Ritalin v. Methylphenidate = same efficacy. Valium v. Diazepam = same efficacy.
