Angelo Dundee, one of the most beloved and universally respected trainers in the history of boxing, died on Wednesday in Tampa, Fla. He was 90 years old. Over the course of his illustrious career Dundee came to personify everything that was pure and good about the sweet science. Time and again, it was he who proved that success would come to those who fought hardest for it, not those who cut the most corners to achieve it.
Dundee was inarguably best known for helping mold the careers of boxing legends Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard, but his true impact on the sport extended far beyond that. He was a master motivator and had one of the most nuanced approaches to preparing fights that has ever been seen. For his efforts, in 1994, Dundee was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
