2010 NBA Orlando Summer League Preview: Philadelphia 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers finished with 27 wins on the season, which ended up landing them the second overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. As we all know, with that selection they went with the 2010 National Player of the Year, Evan Turner.  Turner will certainly help the Sixers “turn” things around, but he won’t be able to do it alone.

The Sixers summer league roster is talented. First year player Evan Turner, second year player Jrue Holiday, and third year player Marreese Speights will give teams fits. But there are others on the roster that can make an impact, notably Ryan Brooks from Temple University.

Ryan Brooks scored 14 points a night for the Owls, who went 29 and 6 on their way to a fifth seed in the NCAA Tournament.  Where Brooks really helped the Owls, however, was on the defensive end.  He was typically assigned to the other teams best scorer and was able to put them on lockdown.

Offensively, Brooks is a better shooter than his 32 percent three-point percentage indicates.  His versatility on offense is probably best evidenced by the fact he was invited to the NCAA three-point competition, but when the night started, they asked him to switch to the slam dunk contest.

Brooks may not end up making the 76ers roster because they seem to have a lot of depth already at the wing, but don’t be surprised if he’s a player that floats around in the D-League with a few 10 day contracts.  After all, it only takes one coach to like you enough to give you a chance, and based on his nearly 15 minutes a game, his hometown 76ers seems to have taken a liking to him.
